Cover for the first Taylor Swift: Girl Detective book, painted digitally. I based the look on vintage Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys covers in keeping with the contents of the book - a tongue in cheek mystery starring Taylor Swift and Lorde as moonlighting detectives.
Personal work based on a running joke in Birds Of Prey, and vintage romance novel covers.
Illustration and Quiz (co-written with Larissa Zageris) for Bedside Press's Gothic Tales of Haunted Love: A Comics Anthology, created by Hope Nicholson.
Highly informed by my love of Gothic romance novel covers from the 50s, 60s and 70s, I jumped at the chance to draw not one but four nubile young maidens fleeing from a haunted castle. The accompanying quiz will help determine if you are the Naive Second Wife, Doomed First Wife, Vulnerable Orphaned Heiress or Plucky Governess.
Some of TV's most iconic female detectives to illustrate the Ace Detective, Gumshoe, Junior Detective, and Top Sleuth levels of the Taylor Swift: Girl Detective Kickstarter.
Poster commissioned for musical Be More Chill
Illustration for How Ill Is Your Repute? - a comedy quiz book created with Larissa Zageris.
I aimed for a slightly cartoonier, modernized version of old fashioned woodcuts, keeping in theme with the 17th century parody world of the quiz.
Artwork for the Magic Mic karaoke fundraiser for the Howard Brown Health Center, as organized by Smash Coven
Cover illustration for the Bodies issue of Hay Nonnie, a quarterly online magazine featuring essays, art, poetry and performances.
I wanted to showcase a diverse range of women in various states of undress depicted in a intimate but non-sexual way. The solution was a shared changing room, with each woman in a pose reflecting her own personal attitude to her body.
Commission by CNN for their #inspirewomen project for International Women's Day 2015. As featured on the CNN homepage, CNN International’s “News Center” show with Isha Sesay, and The Huffington Post.
To celebrate the wisdom of women and to mark International Women's Day 2015, CNN International asked its audience and its journalists to suggest inspirational quotes from female authors, campaigners and leaders. They also drew from interviews from Leading Women, CNN's monthly show that celebrates women at the top of their professional fields. Female designers from across 5 continents were then asked to create an image based on a chosen quote.
I based my image in part on the production art Mary Blair created for Disney in the 50s, in keeping with the fairytale theme.
Commission for a couple. The brief was "Turn us into Victorian Sailors". I mimicked the coloring and gritty print texture of the era for my final design.
Illustration for Taylor Swift: Girl Detective - The Secrets Of The Starbucks Lovers.
Design created for the back of a writer's business card. The brief was to create an eye-catching image that looked like it could come from a fantasy novel.
I decided to use the client's descriptive job title of "Word Witch, Story Wizard" and old woodcuts as the basis for this work. Combining doodle style witch glyphs with the simple hand illustration led to a design that was both mystical and modern.
Personal work for Witchsona week. Based on my competence at Chemistry at school, I decided my Witchsona would be somewhat inept at potions and spells. Like accidentally-summons-demons-when-attempting-to-conjure-cookies levels of inept.
Illustrations for an article by Upworthy about the scientific discovery that mealworms can eat and digest plastic into biodegradable matter.
Design for the back of my business card. I wanted to show off my different styles as well as help people remember whose card it was!
For the promotion and rewards of the Taylor Swift: Girl Detective Kickstarter, I created a heraldic crest featuring Taylor Swift's real life cats, red lipstick and other appropriate accoutrements.
This design was used for a tote bag, and as part of a sticker set that I created another two accompanying images for.
Image created for the Child's i Foundation for use in their Inaugural Ball invitations and other products for commercial use.
They requested I base the design on a piece of fabric the founder bought in Uganda, but simplify it in a way it would be easily transferred onto products such as bags and tshirts. I used the traditional batik designs of the region as inspiration for the new image.
Illustration series for the Upworthy article "I spent a week sharing my feelings with everyone. Here's what happened." by Evan Porter.
I chose a flat graphic style in order to make the figures universal and easily relatable to the reader regardless of race or background.
A series of Spanish/English cue cards for the Upworthy piece "15 encouraging phrases a Spanish speaker like me would love for you to learn." by Alicia Barrón.
The brief was for a fun series of illustrations that could also be downloadable cue cards for use in schools. I have since had several emails and photos tweeted at me by teachers showing them in use in their classrooms!
Illustration series for the Upworthy article "I have a mental disorder. This is what happened when I tried to buy a gun." by Thom Dunn.
I worked with Thom to chart the confusing and time-consuming journey he had when trying to buy his medication, and the series of loopholes he discovered when trying to buy a gun.
Series of illustrations for an article at Upworthy, following one man's journey as he entered into the US illegally from Guatemala.
Illustration series for the Upworthy article "Seattle's epic plan to fight heroin starts with a simple nose spray." by James Gaines.
I deliberately chose bright graphic colors to draw readers in to what was a tough but ultimately uplifting topic.
Personal work.
